How to win the second order: a reorder plan for skincare brands
The first order pays for the ad. The second order pays you. Here is a simple plan to time, write and measure the reorder.
For most skincare brands, the first order barely breaks even once you count ad costs. Profit arrives with the second and third orders. So the most useful question in your business is simple: when does a customer run out, and what do we say just before she does?
Start with the use-up date
Every product has a natural reorder window. A 30 ml serum used twice a day lasts roughly six to eight weeks. A 50 ml moisturiser lasts longer. Work out the window for your top five products from your own order data: look at customers who did reorder and note the median days between orders.
That number is your clock. Reminders that land before it feel helpful. Reminders that land after it arrive when she has already bought something else.
Build five flows before any campaign
- Welcome: who you are, what to try first, and why.
- Post-purchase: how to use the product so it actually works.
- Expectation: what to expect in week one, two and four, so she doesn’t give up early.
- Replenishment: timed a week before the use-up date.
- Win-back: for customers who missed the window.
These five do more for repeat rate than a month of discount campaigns.
Sell the routine, not a discount
Constant discounts teach customers to wait. Offer the next step in the routine instead: the cleanser that pairs with the serum, a refill, or a subscription that protects your margin. Use discounts sparingly, on purpose.
Measure two numbers
Track repeat purchase rate (the share of customers who buy again within a set window) and time to second order. If repeat rate rises and time to second order falls, the plan is working.
A one-page checklist
- Median reorder window for your top five products
- Five core flows live and tested
- One routine offer per hero product
- Repeat rate and time to second order in your weekly report
